03/23/2010 Attendees Start Arriving for CTIA Show

LAS VEGAS—Don't look now, but if attendance at a wireless industry trade show is any indication, things could be looking up.

Attendees started rolling in for this week's International CTIA Wireless 2010 trade show – which based on pre-show numbers as of last week, should draw a bigger crowd than last year. Figures were trending up about 26 percent above last year.

"It's a great time for wireless," and it wouldn't be a surprise if wireless would be one of the first industries to crawl out of the "great recession.," said CTIA Vice President and Show Director Robert Mesirow. "There's a lot of energy here," and CTIA was busily trying to find booth space for late-comers.

Today's events include pre-conference seminars on mobile marketing and advertising, money over mobile, mobile Web and apps and more.

New this year is Apps World, a section devoted to developers; this week's event is expected to draw about 10,000 developers.

One person is not expected to attend this week in person is FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, who was on the tentative schedule before the National Broadband Plan was delayed by a month. The plan was unveiled in Washington, D.C., last week.
