10/08/2009 | FCC Chair Endorses Two CTIA Wishes |
SAN DIEGO— FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski endorsed two CTIA initiatives in his opening keynote at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment today, but didn't add any detail into the impact his hopes for an open Internet will have on the wireless industry. Genachowski's address was interrupted once by mild audience applause – when he promised the FCC will "move forward with a shot-clock proposal designed to speed the process" of getting tower siting approval. Steve Largent, president and CEO of CTIA, also commended Genachowski for supporting the industry's push for additional spectrum. In addition to making spectrum available for 4G mobile broadband and speeding up the tower siting process, Genachowski said his mobile strategy for the FCC includes "fair rules of the road for an open Internet" and providing transparent information for consumers. Genachowski did say he fully understands the difference between wireline and wireless networks, saying "the last thing we want is heavy-handed and prescriptive regulation." He also lauded AT&T for announcing it will allow Internet voice applications like Skype on the iPhone, as well as Verizon Wireless' partnership with the Android smartphone platform |
