10/05/2009 CTIA Reiterates Support for Ban

At the conclusion of the distracted driving summit yesterday, CTIA reiterated its support for state and local legislation that would ban texting for all drivers and place wireless use restrictions on teens and novice drivers.

But CTIA also says laws are not enough. "We also agree with Secretary (Ray) LaHood that personal responsibility is important and every single person needs to be aware about the serious dangers and possible consequences of texting and driving," CTIA said in its statement.

On Tuesday, CTIA unveiled its public service announcement (PSA) with the National Safety Council that is designed to run on local TV stations. Focused on teens, the PSA tells them to simply remember, "On the Road, Off the Phone."

A survey released earlier this week by Context Marketing shows 88 percent of Americans reported they are generally "concerned" about cell phone use and texting while driving and 33 percent say they are "very concerned" about the issue.

Other issues survey respondents said they are concerned about are saving for retirement, healthcare access and affordability, excessive government spending and debt and the unemployment rate. Cell phone use and texting while driving received the same level of concern as quality of public education and ranked higher than illegal immigration.
