06/16/2009 Senate to Hold Hearing on FCC Nominations

The Senate Commerce Committee is scheduled to hold a confirmation hearing tomorrow for proposed new FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and on the renomination of Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Meanwhile, South Carolina utility regulator Mignon Clyburn is being tapped by the president to fill the seat of outgoing commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, who will be serving as administrator for the Rural Utilities Service (RUS).

Meredith Attwell Baker, a former assistant secretary of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), is expected to be nominated to fill the seat left by Republican Deborah Taylor Tate, who left earlier this year.

Among the items on the FCC’s tentative agenda for its July 2 open meeting are a status report on the commission’s process for developing a national broadband plan and a notice of proposed rulemaking on modifying and streamlining rules for fixed wireless services in the 6 GHz and 23 GHz bands.

Earlier this month, acting Chairman Michael Copps announced staff changes, including the return of Blair Levin to the commission to help coordinate its development on the national broadband plan. Levin, a former FCC chief of staff and long-time industry analyst, was at one point named as a possible candidate for Genachowski’s post.
