06/03/2009 Wireless Around the World: Trade Shows Galore

There’s an event for just about every corner of the wireless world this week, whether it’s developers getting together for Sun Microsystems’ JavaOne conference in San Francisco or WiMAX vendors meeting in Amsterdam.

In Amsterdam, the WiMAX Forum is celebrating its second annual Global Congress 2009 with 14 ecosystem partners participating in the first commercial WiMAX interoperability and roaming trials. The participants include Aicent, Alvarion, Bridgewater Systems, Cisco, Clearwire, Comfone, DigitalBridge Communications, Intel, iPass, Juniper Networks, MACH, Motorola, Syniverse and Transaction Network Services.

The trial represents an end-to-end test of roaming over live WiMAX networks and will provide a baseline for establishing roaming services and agreements for WiMAX worldwide, said Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum, in a press release.

Over at Computex Taipei in Taiwan, Qualcomm introduced the WCN1312, a single chip 802.11n-compliant wireless local area networking solution for handsets and mobile devices. The solution offers integration with a 2.4 GHz 802.11n baseband processor, media-access controller, RF transceiver, transmit power amplifier and more. The design eliminates the need for many external RF components, minimizing the component count and resulting in a smaller system footprint.

In the United States, attendees at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles were treated to appearances by Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr and gaming companies announced various mobile versions of their products. The EA Play Label of Electronic Arts, for one, said The Sims 3 game is now available for download from the Apple App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch. The game also is available for purchase, globally, from wireless carriers for feature phones.

And at the Telematics Detroit Conference and Exhibition in Michigan, Airbiquity said it is newly positioned as a complete telematics service provider, offering end-to-end connectivity solutions for automotive OEMs, fleet managers and PND manufacturers.

Airbiquity says its shift to a full telematics service provider was shaped by a series of interviews with automotive OEMs, PND manufacturers, fleet managers, industry analysts, partners and consumers globally. Separately, Airbiquity and Telenor Connexion announced a strategic partnership to enable vehicle connectivity for connected services applications in automotive, portable navigation and fleet solutions across Europe.
