06/02/2009 WiMAX Generates Some Buzz

Since landing support from carrier rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless, LTE has tended to be a bit of a buzz hog. But judging from the stream of WiMAX-related news coming across the wires today, there’s still action in the underdog technology.

Clearwire has made two more vendor announcements as it works to fulfill its plan to build out a nationwide mobile WiMAX network. Today, it was announced that the Sprint-backed mobile WiMAX startup chose Mformation Technologies to supply mobile device management software.

Mformation boasts big-name clients like AT&T, T Mobile and Vodafone and expects to support a range of devices for Clearwire as its device ecosystem takes shape. The company’s service manager is currently up and running in Clearwire’s existing markets and will expand its partnership as Clearwire continues its buildout.

“Going forward, a whole range of new devices will need to be supported, including dongles, netbooks and consumers electronics,” says Rob Dalgety, commercial director at Mformation Technologies.

Last week, there was another vendor announcement related to Clearwire, when Brightpoint North America said it was chosen to provide logistics support, such as inventory management, order processing and invoicing.

The other WiMAX news comes in the form of two additions to the WiMAX Forum’s board of directors. The more notable of the two is Sai Subramanian, Cisco’s director of marketing for its broadband wireless business unit. Subramanian will represent Cisco on the WiMAX Forum board of directors. Cisco was recently selected by Clearwire to provide its national IP Next-Generation Network.

The WiMAX Forum last week also announced it had added Tata Communications’ Chief Operating Officer Prateek Pashine to its board.
